Average to dry soils--French milk thistle

Known as chardon Marie in French, milk thistle (Silybum marianum)is a statuesque plant with beautiful, bold foliage showily marbled with white. Its flowers are attractive to butterflies, while its seed heads are a bonanza for winter-feeding birds. Milk thistle has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy for liver problems. Its common name, meanwhile, stems from its ability to curdle milk. Plant in full sun and well-drained but fertile soil.
