Viper's bugloss (
Echium vulgare) has a name that makes it sound like an ingredient for a witch's brew. But in fact, it is a beautiful and easy annual in the borage family. Found throughout dry regions of France and throughout the Mediterranean basin, including Morocco, viper's bugloss thrives in dry poor soils, uncoiling it's spikes of brilliant sky blue flowers marked with deep violet. Very attractive to hummingbirds.
Sow viper's bugloss in well-drained soil in full sun from spring through mid-summer. Grows around 2 feet tall.
