Downy woundwort (
Stachys germanica) is a little-known French perennial wildflower that deserves to be more widely grown. It grows around 2 feet tall, and is covered in spikes of rosy flowers for most of the summer. These are irresistable to butterflies, who often congregate on the spikes like ornaments. The entire plant is covered with soft, downy hairs.
Plant in light, well-drained soil in full sun to light shade, spring through early fall. Probably hardy at least through Zone 6, but not fully tested.
I've searched for a year to find the right source of French native wildflower seeds to offer you. Here they are! Certified organically grown, these seeds are produced on a family flower farm in the
Massif Central. One hundred percent of the process is artisanal, right down to the seed packets which are decorated with drawings of the content plants by the owner.
