Hand-made by a family pottery in the center of France that is deeply rooted in tradition, this wine pitcher has been made in this same form for hundreds of years. French farmhouses traditionally keep barrels of wine (the house wine!) on hand in the cellar, which are tapped directly and served in pitchers just like this one. Of course, you can defy tradition and just fill it with a bunch of flowers, if you like.
While the forms of this pottery are absolutely traditional--perfected for the inherent gracefulness of utility for generations--the colors are richly contemporary. The owner of this atelier often experiments for months or even years on the perfection of a particular color glaze. In this case, it is a rich marbled medium blue, with touches of gray and ochre tan, that is almost impossible to describe, but ineffably beautiful. This superb Pitcher is dishwasher-, oven-, and microwave-proof. An heirloom in the making.
